Spurs sink Man Utd to end 17-year trophy drought

Tottenham Hotspur defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final and ended their 17-year trophy drought on Wednesday night.

United made  one change from Friday’s loss to Chelsea as Leny Yoro came in for Victor Lindelof, who dropped to the bench, while Pape Matar Sarr was the sole survivor in the Spurs' line-up on the back of their loss to Aston Villa.

The Red Devils had the first meaningful chance when Amad Diallo steered a lay-off from Harry Maguire across the face of goal.

Both teams went at each other in a quiet opening spell with challengers all-round the field flying in and clear scoring chances reduced to a premium.

Spurs made their first threat count four minutes to halftime as Brennan Johnson scooped a near post cross into the area from Sarr beyond a diving Andre Onana, although replays showed Luke Shaw got the final touch.

Diallo looked to level matters instantly with a clever attempt from a tight angle after coming inside, but goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario swiftly snuffed out the threat.

There were no substitutions made by either side ahead of the second half, as the Red Devils had their backs firmly against the wall.

Yoro did come close to levelling it up ten minutes later with a snap shot from close-range following a free-kick into the area, but Vicario parried away.

Rasmus Hojlund was denied a clear goal midway through the second half when he saw his first-time header scooped off the goal-line by Micky Van de Ven.

Hojlund then had to make way for Joshua Zirkzee in the final minutes, with Alejandro Garnacho also introduced in the place of Mason Mount.

The Red Devils threw a lot of numbers forward late on in the hope of the equaliser, but Spurs absorbed the pressure and claimed the Europa League trophy and entry to next season’s UEFA Champions League.
