Mesut Ozil: Adidas ends seven-year £17.5m sponsorship with Arsenal superstar

Adidas will end their £17.5-million sponsorship with Mesut Ozil after a rapid decline in fortunes and controversy surrounding the Arsenal playmaker.

The sportswear giant have opted not to renew the sponsorship deal that's been active for the past seven-years and paid out an estimated £2.5m a year.

Ozil previously had major dea with rivals Nike and was considered a marquee capture for Adidas in 2013, joining the likes of Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba and Gareth Bale.

It's been reported in German news outlet Bild that Ozil's recent public image has impacted the decision of the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner.

Having retired from international football in 2018 with accusations of racism from the German FA due to his alleged political affiliation with Turkey president Recep Erdogan.

The 31-year-old also refused o take a 12.5 percent pay-cut with the Gunners during the coronavirus enforced suspension of football which caused a widespread outcry from the London-based club's passionate supporters.

Another main factor has is said to be a cut-costing measure from the German brand to alleviate financial strains caused by the global pandemic.
