The Premier League and UEFA Champions League is suspended indefinitely during the current lockdown in Europe after the continent became the epicentre of the outbreak.
And the Belgium international says the experience of being isolated at home is has made him want to prolong his career more than he initially planned.
"I told my wife I'm going to play a little bit longer after the lockdown. I cannot stay at home," De Bruyne said, as per ESPN FC.
"I'm going to play two more years. It's hard, man. It's time to play football again. I miss it and it's difficult.
"But we are not important, football is not important. People love football... but you need to stay safe."
De Bruyne also revealed the rest of the City squad have communicated with WhatsApp and video calls during the turbulent period and had a treadmill delivered to his home recently.
"I don't want a bike," he said before claiming the City staff are monitoring their fitness whilst away from the club.
"I'm swimming every day. Running almost every day now."
De Bruyne has scored nine goals and registered 20 assists in 35 games across all competitions this season.
