Liverpool lost out on the FA Community Shield after losing to Crystal Palace on penalties on Sunday evening.
New signings Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong made their debuts for the Premier League champions, while Jean-Philippe Mateta and Eberechi Eze started in the attack for Palace.
The new boys got the Reds rolling five minutes in when Wirtz wriggled possession into the path of Ekitike, who curled into the far corner from the edge of the box.
Palace regained momentum ten minutes later and levelled matters when Mateta beat Alisson Becker with a perfectly struck penalty after he had gone down from Virgil van Dijk’s challenge.
Frimpong restored the lead around the midway stages after he pulled to the right of the attacking area to see his cross-cum shot sailed into the far corner.
In the second half, the dominance from the league champions continued as Ekitike threatened a brace with a low first-time shot that flew inches wide of the net.
The Eagles weren’t out of it and could’ve gone level 12 minutes thereafter through a header by Chris Richards and fierce shot to the near post by Eze, but Alisson was equal to both efforts.
Liverpool were pegged back inside the final minutes when Ismaila Sarr burst through the area following a through pass by Adam Wharton and tucked in off the post.
With time running out, no winner emerged in regulation time as the encounter headed to penalties, where Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson became the hero with two saves as Justin Devenny netted the winning kick to give them the crown.
