Mailula: It breaks your spirit

Cassius Mailula has made a heartfelt admission about his time in Major League Soccer amid his impending return to Toronto FC.

Mailula is coming off a successful season-long loan spell at Wydad Athletic Club.

The South African star’s move to Morocco was sanctioned by his former Mamelodi Sundowns manager Rulani Mokwena, who was in charge at Wydad at the time.

The striker made 36 appearances in all competitions for Wydad, contributing six goals and seven assists, according to Transfermarkt.

In addition to winning Wydad’s January 2025 Player of the Month award, Mailula featured in every match at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and found the net against Emirati giants Al-Ain.

Although he rediscovered his confidence in Casablanca, Mailula has now admitted that his spirit was often broken during his time at parent club Toronto FC in Canada.

He told Sports Amplified: “Sometimes obviously when you’re not playing it breaks your spirit because you know what you’re capable of and all that you want is just to be given opportunity to play and to showcase your talent.

“Obviously, I’m from South Africa and I know how big this is to come and play in Toronto.

“And everyone at home is watching and supporting you and they’re wondering why you left if now you’re in a big club but you’re not playing, you could’ve stayed (at Sundowns).

“But I have a good support system I knew that going there it’s risk also I had to be strong, I had to keep myself strong and to keep going.

“And hopefully wait for a chance to play.”
