Ahly star 'demands' starting role under Riveiro

Al Ahly star Aliou Dieng has reportedly issued a firm demand to head coach Jose Riveiro and the club’s management before agreeing to extend his stay with the Egyptian giants.

Dieng, who joined Ahly in July 2019, spent last season on loan at Saudi Arabian side Al-Kholood after he was out of then-coach Marcel Koller’s plans.

Now back at his parent club, the Malian midfielder appears to be part of Riveiro’s future plans. The 27-year-old was included in the squad for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, making a single appearance under Riveiro.

He is also currently with the squad for their pre-season camp in Tunisia, but he has to sign a new contract extension with the 12-time CAF Champions League winners.

According to Ahly News, Dieng is demanding a guarantee of a regular starting spot in his new deal. The player reportedly stressed that he does not want to sit on the bench, as it could affect both his performance level and market value.

However, Riveiro is said to have rejected the idea outright, insisting that team selection must remain solely within the technical staff’s rights.

Dieng’s current contract runs until the end of the 2025/26 season. He will be free to negotiate with other clubs from January 2026.
