Mayambela chases UEFA dream as Chiefs circle

As Kaizer Chiefs contemplate the signing of Mihlali Mayambela, the Bafana Bafana attacker is gearing up for a return to European football with Aris Limassol.

Mayambela's Limassol missed out on European qualification last season, after finishing fourth in the Cypriot First Division Championship play-off standings.

They have qualified for the UEFA Europa Conference League preliminary rounds after finishing second last term.

The Cypriot giants will begin their journey of fighting to qualify for the League format when they enter in the second qualifying round against Puskas Akademia.

The first round clash is scheduled for Thursday 24 June in Limassol, with the return leg at the end of the month in Hungary.

The winner of the tie, on aggregate, will go through to the final hurdle before the play-off round, where 24 teams will advance to the League format of the competition, joined by 12 losers of the Europa League play-off round.

Mayambela's Aris were last in the Conference tournament proper in 2023/24, where they negotiated past the qualifying rounds, including the play-offs and qualified for the group stage, which was the final season before the League format was introduced last season.

They finished bottom of Group B with four points, with Rangers and Sparta Prague progressing to the knockout phase.

However, after a format change last season, 36 teams will be in a straight League phase, with a much better chance of going through to the knockout stages.

Each team faces six different sides, with three games at home and three away.

The Khayelitsha-born attacker could fancy having a go with Limassol in their pursuit to qualify for the Conference League proper, before making a decision on whether he would agree to join Chiefs, should they make a bid for his services.

Mayambela confirmed on Soccerbeat that the Soweto giants have shown interest in his services, speaking to him personally.

However, they appear not to have approached his club yet.
