Bafana get midfield boost ahead of World Cup qualifiers

After Bafana Bafana midfielder Sphephelo Sithole missed the majority of the season due to injury, agent Manuel Tomas has revealed what his client's immediate focus is.

Sithole's last competitive match was back in October last year when he had to be stretchered off with a broken leg in the last 20 minutes, in Bafana's 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Sudan, which they won 3-2 away.

It was a moment of heartbreak for the 26-year-old, who had just secured a loan move to Primeira Liga outfit Gil Vicente and, as a result, he has not returned for his club since, after making only two appearances.

Vicente struggled without the Bafana international, only surviving relegation towards the end of the campaign.

Currently, they are 14th in the standings, six points above the relegation zone, with only one game of 2024/25 remaining.

Tomas has confirmed to KickOff.com that 'Yaya' has fully recovered and is back on the green grass, though his immediate focus will be to build up his fitness for pre-season.

"Everything is good now, he's training 100%, but we lost this season with the injury," said Tomas.

With 'Yaya' back training, he will be hoping to return to the Bafana fold when they resume the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in September.

Hugo Broos' charges will travel to neighbouring Lesotho right at the beginning of September and host Nigeria a week later.

"That's the focus. All the time, the people in the national team, they support 'Yaya'. They know what happened and they supported him during the season. They spoke with him every time, wonderful," Tomas revealed.

Bafana have a five-point lead at the top of Group C in the World Cup qualifiers, though have an ineligibility case pending at FIFA after Teboho Mokoena defaulted in a 2-0 win over Likuena in March.

Jayden Adams and Bathusi Aubaas have both been alternating to partner the Mamelodi Sundowns man in midfield in Sithole's absence.
