Ronwen Williams: There is history to be written for Bafana Bafana

South Africa are on the brink of progressing to the next round of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and know that a win over neighbours Zimbabwe on Thursday could seal their passage, depending on results elsewhere.

The national team currently sits atop the Group G standings with 10 points from four matches, which is one more than nearest rivals, Ghana, who are set to face Ethiopia at the Orlando Stadium earlier in the day.

Should Ghana lose to Ethiopia, and South Africa beat Zimbabwe, Bafana Bafana will automatically progress to the next round. If Ghana beat Ethiopia, Hugo Broos side must defeat the Warriors and then avoid defeat against the Black Stars on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of Thursday's encounter, captain Ronwen Williams revealed that there was a positive mood in the camp and that he and his teammates were aware of the history they could make if they go on to qualify for the World Cup.

"The main thing is that we've got a positive feeling that we can on to the next round," the SuperSport United star said ahead of the match.

"We are No. 1 on the log which is something that hasn't happened in years. There's a new excitement around the place with the younger guys. They are more [excited] and obviously, we know there is history to be written.

"The last time we qualified was in 2002 [South Africa qualified as hosts in 2010] and now we know we've got half a foot over the line. So, we know the ball is in our court. We don't want favours from anyone.

"And that's the nice thing, whereas before we would need favours from other teams or a result to go our way, now we've done the business 10 points after four games and we just need to go out there and win the game.

"It's a home game and we said we want to win all our home games, and so far so good. So we want to finish it off tonight..."
