Inside Bafana Bafana training ahead of Ghana, Sudan AFCON qualifiers

Bafana Bafana are fully engaged in preparations for their crucial, back-to-back 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ghana and Sudan this week.

The squad assembled in Sandton, Johannesburg on Sunday evening with some starts arriving on Monday morning, including Brighton Hove Albion forward Percy Tau.

Despite playing in England, Tau was released for national duty amid the coronavirus lockdown, unlike fellow UK-based duo Bongani Zungu and Dean Furman, who are yet to link up with the team.

South Africa play Ghana on Thursday evening (18h00 kick-off) at FNB Stadium and held their first training session on Monday afternoon.

Several stars were present, including Themba Zwane, Andile Jali, Itumeleng Khune and Portugal-based Lyle Foster among others, under the watchful eye of coach Molefi Ntseki and assistants Trott Moloto and Arthur Zwane.

Thabiso Kutumela and Thabo Nodada also took part in the session, after receiving late call-ups to join the camp in the event that the rest of the European-based contingent is unable to make it.

"We are negotiating. For example, with Keagan Dolly, the situation is a problem in France, because the country's regulations say, when coming back from Africa, a 14-day quarantine is needed upon arrival," explained Bafana team doctor Thulani Ngwenya.

"So, that makes it unfavourable for the club to release the player, and that's the kind of situations we are faced with. With Bongani [Zungu], we are still negotiating and it's quite advanced, to be honest. There is a high likelihood that Bongani could join us in Sudan.

"But to be honest, the ones that haven't arrived will not be coming to South Africa, so the next negotiation now is for them to come and join us in Sudan."
