Tau is one of nine overseas-based players who have been called up by Bafana Bafana head coach Molefi Ntseki for this month's 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Ghana and Sudan but his participation is in doubt due to FIFA's Covid-19 exemption.
This could be applicable in the case of Brighton forward Tau due to the fact that South Africa is on the United Kingdom's 'Red List', which means the Bafana Bafana star would have to quarantine for a period of 10 days after his return to England.
"I think we are going to speak about it over the next few days and the upcoming week maybe with a bit more clarity from FIFA or whoever else can give us that information, Potter said, per The Argus.
"But we will take the decision as a club, which is right for the players and for us and what we can do."
The 45-year-old also agreed with the suggestion that clubs should be given the final say on the matter and that allowing players to leave for international duty in situations where they would be forced to come back and quarantine was nonsensical.
"It seems sensible to me [that clubs should be able to decide] in terms of what we have just come out of and that type of movement, and then to have a ten-day quarantine doesn't make a lot of sense. But like I said, we will speak about it next week and then we will know for sure."
