Story Behind My Nickname: "Page" Mahlangu

In this edition of Story Behind My Nickname former Mamelodi Sundowns star Sello Mahlangu details the origin of his popular nickname "Page".

"First of all this is my nickname and not my original name," Mahlangu tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"I owned the name since the age of 11 or 12 years old, somewhere there.

"It was given to me by another gentleman called Rocks Mothlala. He is from Tembisa.

"We were still playing in the Under-14 age category at our amateur club at that time. On that Saturday, we were washing our jerseys preparing for our Sunday match.

"While we were still busy washing our jerseys he came to us, and he gave all of us nicknames. When it was my turn he said to me "you are Page".

"I only asked him about the name after some years, that time I was already playing in our senior team and he said, "there was this guy who was playing for Witbank Aces, Page Mahlangu, and I have taken that name from that guy and I have given it to you because you share a similar surname".

"So That name stuck with me in a sense that people ended up forgetting my real name.

"Even the original owner of the nickname was never so popular like me (laughs)."

"Like his namesake, Mahlangu also ended up at AmaZayoni after his move to Jomo Cosmos failed to materialise as Jomo Sono dragged his feet.

"In fact, Jomo didn't reject me he just wasted my time by not signing me.

"The Aces offer came when the club relocated from Witbank to KwaMhlanga.

"I really don't know what Page means, but I think it was a foreign surname from abroad.

"I know there was a boxer from that side whose name was Page. In Europe, this surname is very popular."
