What used to be a mecca of football for residents in Mabopane and other surrounding areas including Soshanguve and Garankuwa has now turned into a home for rats in Tshwane.
While there is glimmer of hope that HM Pitje Stadium in Mamelodi could still be refurbished and return to the old glory days, Odi Stadium in the centre of Mabopane is depleting and slowly dying a natural death.

Judging by the state of the ground there is no hope that this venue will see football or any other sporting event again in our lifetime.
There is already fear amongst community members that the stadium could soon be used for anti-social activities including their kids using it as a place to smoke nyaope.
"It's a very sad situation. The place is like a forest now and rats are having joy there. The building is collapsing," Mabopane resident Phuti Sekgobela tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"There is no hope that this place will host football again. There are no more activities for the youth at the stadium.
"The business for hawkers around Mabopane used to boom when big games were played at the stadium. This has resulted in an increase in crime and kids smoking nyaope."
Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Vuyo Mere still holds great memories of playing football at Odi Stadium, where he lifted his first league trophy with The Brazilians.

"I don't remember us losing a match there. The pitch was always in good condition and it was always a pleasure playing there," Mere says.
"I remember when I won the league for the first time with Sundowns and we played Orlando Pirates there. It was a great spectacle and we lifted the trophy in front of the supporters who came in great numbers.

"It's truly sad to see the state and condition the stadium is in right now and one can ask questions why that great stadium is left to be in that state."
When contacted by this website, Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts and Culture spokesperson Nomazwe Ntlokwane requested time to consult with her authorities about the future of Odi Stadium.
