Concerns surrounding domestic fixtures and AFCON continue

The Premier Soccer League and the South African Football Association have not yet reached an understanding regarding the domestic fixtures, ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The men's senior national team, Bafana Bafana will be taking part in the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast in January, with the squad set to go into camp during the first week of the new year.

Bafana head coach Hugo Broos and Safa CEO Danny Jordaan have expressed dissatisfaction that the PSL did not conclude an early Christmas break to allow players to rest ahead of the continental showpiece. The concerns raised ahead of the tournament include possible fatigue and underperformance due to lack of rest.

According to the PSL, the federation should have raised the concerns earlier.

"It is extremely surprising and difficult to understand why are they saying we shouldn't be playing a game when our fixture list has been out since June," a source at the PSL tells KickOff.

"It's difficult to understand. How can you wake up this late and say the league must stop?

"We find it so strange that they are only complaining now when the fixture list has been out since the beginning of June," a source revealed.

An insider at Bafana Bafana rubbished the PSL's claims.

"Hugo Broos wrote a letter to the PSL ages ago when the fixtures were to be released asking for the fixtures to be postponed," claims the source at Safa.

"I'm not sure why the meeting was only held now. The players have had no rest over the past year."
