In this edition of My Welcome To The League Moment, ex-Dynamos goalkeeper Amon Phophi shares an incredibly funny story about how he couldn't grasp the true meaning of a teammate's words.
The retired goalkeeper shares how he was welcomed to professional football by teammates and opponents when he broke onto the scene.
Phophi says he will never forget the day he assumed Hammanskraal was just a huge municipal building.
"I remember traveling to Jo'burg from Limpopo with Dynamos for the first time," Phophi tells KickOff.
"So, on the road, I kept asking this other guy sitting next to me: 'Which place is this? Where are we now?' [Laughs] I kept doing that in every town or place we drove past.
"So, we reached Hammanskraal, and again I asked this guy next to me: 'Where are we now? What is this place?' and the guy said: 'Hammanskraal'.
"But because I couldn't hear him clearly as the other players were noisy inside the bus, I thought he said: 'Ka Masipala' [at the municipal office].
"As we continued driving through Hammanskraal, after a few minutes, I asked him again: 'So, what about these shops? Where are we now? Where is this place?'
And he said: 'We are still in Hammanskraal'.
"And still, I thought he was saying: 'We are still Ka Masipala' [laughes]. I was now confused.
"[Laughs] You should have seen the way I looked at him in disbelief. I said to him, 'No, man, this municipality must be the biggest in the country'.
"When we reached Jo'burg, I became a huge joke, you know. Everyone was laughing at me.
"Because of that, I didn't wanna ask any more questions. I was afraid I was gonna be a laughing stock again.
"We camped in this other hotel, Carlton Centre, and those boys from the Kaizer Chiefs development were staying there. Also, Benedict Vilakazi, when he was still at [Orlando] Pirates, he was staying there."
