Mamelodi Sundowns' next trophy success will elevate them above Kaizer Chiefs in the number of trophies won through the PSL era years but will be the eleventh The Brazilians have won since Amakhosi last lifted silverware.
Both Sundowns and Chiefs are tied on 20 trophies won since the PSL came into existence in August 1996, but Chiefs have been holding on to their 20 for the six years now.
However, that the next piece of silverware loading at Chloorkop will be the tenth since Chiefs also celebrated a trophy demonstrates the measure of success enjoyed by Sundowns in the last half dozen years and lays bare just how wide the 'levels' have widened between the two rivals.
Since the day Chiefs last lifted a trophy, which was the league on May 9, 2015 – Sundowns have gone to rule the domestic championship four times (2015/16, 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20), won Nedbank Cup twice (2015 and 2020) just like the Telkom KnockOut (2015 and 2019) and then added the colossal CAF Champions League in 2016 and the 2017 CAF Super Cup.
That is a count of 10 trophies for Sundowns while AmaKhosi fire blanks and change coaches from Steve Komphela to Giovanni Solinas then Ersnt Middendorp and now Gavin Hunt with a child born in the year Chiefs last tasted silverware now ready for Grade 1.
Chiefs are unlikely to win any silverware this term as they already need binoculars to keep sight of Sundowns in the league while they are without much of a chance in the CAF Champions League – a competition which The Brazilians have already become the first to reach the last eight halfway through the group stages.
Sundowns are still in with a shout in the Nedbank Cup.
As of now The Brazilians are favourites to retain the league for the fourth year running and remain a good bet in both the CAF Champions League and Nedbank Cup so chances are that they will most likely add another trophy this season.
