Chiefs urged to keep forgotten star

With a return to continental football next season, club legend Doctor Khumalo has urged Kaizer Chiefs to keep hold of their seemingly out-of-favour players.

The Soweto giants will be relieved to put behind them a disastrous season that sees them finish ninth on the Betway Premiership table with an underwhelming nine wins to show for their 28 matches.

However, they will draw confidence from the Nedbank Cup triumph, one that guarantees them passage to next season's CAF Confederations Cup.

With the increased schedule, Amakhosi will need a squad with enough depth to compete both locally and on the continent. This may present some lifelines for players previously deemed surplus to requirements in Naturena.

One of them is Mduduzi Mdantsane, who is set to return to Chiefs after a disappointing loan spell at Richards Bay. The attacking midfielder still has a year remaining on his contract with Chiefs, and although  Amakhosi are understood to be willing to sell.

Doctor Khumalo, speaking on Soccer Zone, has warned against that route.

"It will be good for Mdu [to go back to Chiefs]," Khumalo said on the show.

"Because remember, at Chiefs he was not getting game-time and the reason why loan players are is for them to get game time so that when they come back they can say at least they gained game-time.

"The unfortunate part is that as a player, if at Richards Bay they don't want him, then he has to go back to Kaizer Chiefs, and from where I am sitting, with my experience and what I saw from Mdu, he can come in  handy."
