Mamelodi Sundowns explain Neo Maema, Grant Kekana, Pavol Safranko, Divine Lunga signings

Considering the squad that Sundowns already have, question marks have been raised about the choices made by The Brazilians in the transfer market ahead of the new season.

The club have thus far confirmed the signing of Maema from Bloemfontein Celtic, Pavol Safranko from Romanian club Sepsi OSK, Grant Kekana from SuperSport United and Divine Lunga from Golden Arrows.

"The recruitment was done in a thorough manner where we did a lot of analysis with the assistance of data," Mokwena explained to Downs' media team.

"Neo Maema allows us to have a left-footed winger as the last time we had a left-footed winger was when we had Keagan Dolly and we never really replaced him and further on we lost Percy Tau.

"The scarcity of a left-winger with the right profile is something that you don't find on the market. With Neo, he is that and the boy as a degree in chemistry, and he is a smart kid that we did our own background check on because we look at personality traits when we recruit."

The former Orlando Pirates assistant coach also further explained the thinking behind the rest of their new additions.

"Safranko's age is important because we have tried to cut down the average age of our squad. He brings a technical and tactical quality of being a focal point, to link up play around the box against teams that reinforce the defensive blocks.

"Grant has leadership qualities and comes from a good educational background; he brings versatility and in these Covid-19 times, you need these trump card players.

"Divine is also one that ticks a couple of boxes – his versatility and ability to influence the game, not just in open play because he has very good possibilities to get into the final third, his numbers are very good.

"We are also in a space where we are trying to improve the number of left-footed players in the squad. We are fortunate that he also comes with international experience.

"His best game was against the Egyptians when he had to deal with Mohammed Salah, and he put him in his pocket [at the 2019 AFCON with Zimbabwe]. His ability to perform in big games against good players is important for us."
