Mamelodi Sundowns begin discussions with Surprise Moriri following contract expiry

Moriri – who is now 36 – has been with The Brazilians for the past 12 years during which time he has won the league title on four occasions, the Nedbank Cup twice, the MTN8 once, and the Telkom KnockOut once.

“Surprise’s contract came to an end on June 30 but he is a legend at this club,” stated Sundowns chief executive Sizwe Nzimande. “His contribution and commitment to this club has been phenomenal.

"There are very few people that give of themselves so much to one single club. People that come to mind are the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes of this world, the Surprise Moriris of this world, the Esrom Nyandoros of this world."

Nzimande also revealed that the public would be made aware of any decision as soon as it had been made and urged people not to pry into proceedings.

"We are in discussion with Surprise at the moment and trying to see what the way forward would be and as soon as we come to a conclusion with him we will definitely make that public," he said.

"I would like to afford him the respect to discuss his career situation in confidence without having it splashed in the media and in private and once we have reached that conclusion we will definitely make an announcement."

With a dozen years spent at Chloorkop and having played little football over the last two years, Moriri himslef is yet to indicate what his desire is.

“I am yet to find a player who comes to the end of his career especially one that has been as dedicated as Surprise and then says no, I think I am done.

It is always a difficult decision for any player that has committed so much of himself, it is difficult. So in his heart I think he still wants to play some football and it is a discussion that we must have with him and figure out where to,” Nzimande explains.
