Kaizer Chiefs head coach Stuart Baxter's record against title rivals

Stuart Baxter's winning record against the Big Three remains a concern following Kaizer Chiefs' latest defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns over the weekend.

Chiefs found no joy yet again on their second trip to the capital city within a month after falling to a 2-0 defeat on Sunday.

The latest defeat came courtesy of goals from Sundowns' Grant Kekana and Peter Shalulile leaving Baxter with a clear gulf in quality between the two sides.

Last month AmaKhosi were knocked out of the MTN8 by the Brazilians on penalties leaving Baxter with a record of just three wins from nine games in his second stint as Chiefs coach.

While he has already faced the champions twice in recent weeks, the 68-year-old came up against the men from Chloorkop on seven occasions in his first spell.

The first match was a baptism of fire when Chiefs were humbled 4-1 but he was then to win three along.

His record against Sundowns stands at three wins, four defeats (including MTN8 penalty loss) and two draws.

Then against Orlando Pirates – the other member of the PSL Big Three – Baxter has also won three from nine.

What is better is that he has only lost once to Pirates with five games ending in stalemates.

So from 18 matches that Chiefs have played against both Pirates and Sundowns under Baxter, they have won six which irons out to a 33% winning rate.

Defeats count for five while seven games have been draws.

Chiefs will only face Sundowns again in May next year provided they don't meet in the Nedbank Cup while the next Soweto derby is set for November 6.
