Joseph Kamwendo pays tribute to Orlando Pirates upon retirment

Kamwendo was signed by Pirates after being spotted playing for the Malawian National Team during the COSAFA tournament held in Swaziland in 2007.

'Shakira', as he is affectionately known, is currently back home in Malawi, where has been playing for Mighty Wanderers, and has now announced his retirement from professional football.

"After incredible years at Wanderers, I have decided that now is the right time to finish my career as a footballer," said Kamwendo on Christmas Eve.

"Whilst I have received a number of exciting offers to continue playing, I feel now is the time to begin the next chapter of my life.

"I have many people to thank, but mostly my parents for instilling in me the values of hard work, dedication and professionalism that I have carried with me in everything I do in life."

Kamwendo has also paid tribute to Bucs chairman Irvin Khoza and the club for introducing him to the international football stage.

"Pirates made me to be known to the whole world. Special respect to the chairman Dr Irvin Khoza for giving me the opportunity to be part of the club's history," added the 33-year-old.

Kamwendo is now looking to venture into coaching and is expected to host a testimonial match, which will feature the likes of Sibusiso Zuma.
