Makusu joined Pirates during the past transfer window period on loan from AS Vita Club until the end of the season with an option to make the move permanent next season.
The much-hyped 28-year-old striker has only managed to score one goal for the Buccaneers since his arrival, against Jwaneng Galaxy in the CAF Champions League in Botswana.
With the return from injury of both strikers Gabadinho Mhango and Tshegofatso Mabasa, it has sent the Congolese star further down the pecking order.
It now remains to be seen if Bucs will exercise the option on Mundele's contract as he fails to make much of a contribution to the team this year.
However, a senior official at Pirates has given a ray of hope to Makusu.
"Obviously he has not played much because of different reasons and it's unfair to judge him on the number of games he has played so far," the official at Pirates tells snl24.com/kickoff.
"There are still more games to be played in the league, Nedbank Cup and the CAF Confederation Cup to prove himself. Let's wait and see until the end of the season."
Pirates failed to score for the first time in a Soweto Derby this season as they went down 1-0 to Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
