Mabena: Pirates’ Mofokeng is the best player in SA

In this edition of In The Spotlight, KickOff speaks to former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Gregory Mabena.

Like many talented youngsters, Mabena came through the ranks of the Soweto giants and eventually reached the first team, but he struggled to maintain his position on the squad.

Who is the best footballer you played with in SA?

"What a difficult question. I would say Emmanuel 'Scara' Ngobese."

Who is your role model in football?

"It's funny because my role model was a player, not a goalkeeper—Ronaldinho from Brazil."

If you could live anywhere in the world, which country would you choose?

"I'd choose Dubai. It's a nice place to relax and clear your mind."

Which player gave you a tough time on the pitch?

"Since I didn't play many games at my professional clubs, most of my challenges came from my own teammates. At Kaizer Chiefs, it was Knowledge Musona during training. I found it difficult to stop his shots. At Free State, Noah Chivuta was also a big threat."

What was your best game ever professionally?

"It was during my time in the NFD when Free State Stars loaned me to Carara Kicks. We played against Bay United."

Who is the best player in SA?

"Relebohile Mofokeng from Orlando Pirates."

Who do you consider the best goalkeeper in the PSL?

"It's unfortunate that we only have one standout goalkeeper in this country, and that's Ronwen Williams."

KFC or Chicken Licken?

"To me, they are the same; the taste is almost identical, as they both sell chicken. But right now, I would choose Chicken Licken," [he laughs].

Who do you think will win the league?

"It's obvious it will be Sundowns, even though they had a slow start. I expect my own team, Kaizer Chiefs, to finish in the top four. We are still building."

What is your favourite food?

"Give me rice and stew."

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

"My strength is that I don't give up easily. My weakness, however, is not being able to handle defeat. I really dislike losing."
