'I used to imitate Botende Eshele’

How did it all begin?

"It all began at my township near the DRC capital city, Kinshasa. I started as a speedy winger giving tough times to all defenders while playing amongst ourselves as well as during school tournaments. Everybody predicted me to have a great future.

"Then, there was a day when our senior's team (in our township) was playing but did not have a goalkeeper, then requested me to help just to be there.

"Surprisingly I did extremely well, I believe due to my jumping ability as at that time I was also trying to play basketball because of my height.

"Since that day, every day our seniors had a game, they preferred having me in goals than their goalkeeper. That's where I was discovered and was brought straight to a First Division team called AS Chanimetal. That's where it all started."

Goalkeepers you looked up to?

"Growing up, I used to watch and imitate different local goalkeepers like Merikani Mpangi and Botende Eshele, amongst the great ones.

"Abroad, I used to follow the likes of David Seaman of England, Fabien Barthez of France, but more Victor Baia of Portugal. That's where people started calling me Baia, then 'Baya' as my movements became similar to him."

Current favourite?

"My favorite goalkeeper today is Ronwen Williams. I used to watch him since he made his debut at SuperSport United while I was playing for Polokwane City FC at that time.

"With his performances at Mamelodi Sundowns and at the AFCON in Cote d'Ivoire, especially in the third-place game against the DRC, from where I was sitting on the bench I could realize his determination to make things happen.

"Determination, winning mentality and leadership are among the qualities I see in him.

"There are also some great goalkeepers out there, but Williams is my favourite one today."
