My Locker Room Secrets: Roger De Sa

In this week's edition of My Locker Room Secrets, KickOff grabs a chair as legendary former Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns and Wits University goalkeeper Roger De Sa regales us about the good old days.

The former Orlando Pirates head coach reveals how some of his teammates at the three clubs he turned out for used to behave.

Who was always late?

"Swallows, Sundowns, Wits - those are three clubs I played for. As for [being] late, [it happened] only when I was at Wits because the guys had day jobs in those days.

"Guys would come to training wearing suits and ties, or their work clothes. So, I can't remember one specific player who was always late. There wasn't a regular latecomer."

Any interesting rituals before you played?

"I had my superstitions. I'd put on the right sock and the right boot first. Apart from that, too many guys had too many rituals. I can't remember anybody that pulled up something crazy."

Who was the jokester?

"We had some fantastic characters in my time... Noel Cousins, Calvin Petersen and Les Grobler. That was at Swallows.

"At Sundowns, we had Zane Moosa, who was his own man. He used to do his own thing. Chancy Gondwe was a fantastic guy, but he was also a character with his comments and jokes. Augustine Makalakalane as well. The first player to arrive with the white soccer boots."

Which team's change room was the muti change room?

"Swallows's change room was the muti change room. Hey, stop the bus! Get off the bus! We are heading to the river! We had a lot of those memories.

"As a goalkeeper, they used to make me put some stuff at the goalmouth. And another thing, our kit never looked clean.

"But it was okay, it was not something that put our health at risk you know, and sometimes it helped us [laughs]."

Who was the singer?

"Steve Sekano was the Swallows singer, if I remember. He was always the loudest when we started singing."

Who was the best-dressed and the worst-dressed?

"I have to give that one to Chancy Gondwe and Makalakalane. Chancy with his leather pants and Makalakalane with long leather jackets. So, definitely those two.

"I don't know if they were well-dressed, but they used to dress differently.

"Worst dressers, there were whiteys in my team that had no idea. Graham Louw. Andrew Ramsden who was a disaster. Les Grobler, who is an accountant, was also boring."

Who never showered?

"That wouldn't happen because if someone didn't want to shower, we made sure we threw him on the shower. There was no chance we would allow you to get in the bus without showering."

Rate the coach's team talk

"Clive Barker was the motivator. Eddie Lewis knew how to get the best out of you. Clemens Westerhof had the funniest team talks all the time. With him, it was always a comedy show. And Stan 'Screamer' Tshabalala is a great storyteller. He started his team talks by telling his team a story. He had us laughing always."
