How I Became a Goalkeeper - Roger De Sa

In our feature How I Became a Goalkeeper, the legendary Roger De Sa reveals how he ended up between the sticks in his decorated career for club and country.

The 58-year-old 1996 Africa Cup of Nations winner featured for Bafana Bafana alongside Moroka Swallows, Mamelodi Sundowns and Wits University FC at club level before hanging up his boots in 2001.

"Our goalkeeper had a motorbike accident on his way to the game, and funny enough, he couldn't make it to the game.

"I was a youngster in the team, so they told me, look, you play Basketball, so go in the goals, and after that match, they said to me, from now on, you stay in goals and be our goalkeeper.

"I was 16, I was playing in the first division for a Johannesburg-based team.

"Two years later, I signed for Benoni United as a professional. So it was a very quick transition from being a midfielder.

"Because I was playing Basketball, it was very easy. I was okay at being made a goalkeeper because my father was a goalkeeper.

"I was brave because I also played Rugby at school and so many other sports.

"The fact that I played Basketball was probably the biggest factor that made it easy, and of course, later on when the rules changed, and we had to play with our feet, it was easy for me because I came from a playing background."

De Sa revealed who he admired and based his game on during his childhood.

"Funny enough because being in South Africa I watched a lot of Peter Bala'c because he used to train with my junior club, and of course, there was my father, and we used to watch a lot of overseas goalkeepers.

"But of course, in South Africa, Peter Bala'c was very steady, he did all the basics right. That's what I remember about him. He played for a very big club. At the time, Kaizer Chiefs were winning everything."

"In present times, Ronwen Williams is a good goalkeeper, but in the South African market, I still maintain Wayne Roberts was head and shoulders above everybody I've come across in the South African scene.

"Overseas, there are so many good ones, I mean the two Brazilian guys at Liverpool and Manchester City are unbelievable. They are very, very good because of their ability to play with their feet."
