In this edition of In The Spotlight, KickOff catches up with former Black Leopards striker Coxwell Ratshivhadelo.
The Limpopo-born striker reveals why never got to score against the Orlando Pirates in his entire football career.
Growing up, who was your idol?
"I was a big fan of Samora Khulu. He is the reason why I donned the number 9 jersey when I turned professional. He was a very good striker for Kaizer Chiefs."
Growing up which team did you support?
"Kaizer Chiefs. It was very difficult to support a different team when your father is a big Khosi fan. You had to align with him [laughs].
"I'm not disappointed for ending my career without having played for Chiefs because I always wanted to keep my job at the Department of Correctional Services.
"I knew they run things professionally at Chiefs, they were never going to allow me to continue with my day job while I'm playing for them.
"But the only team that approached me back then was Jomo Cosmos."
Who was the most influential in your football career?
"Owen Da Gama and Gavin Hunt. I'm from the same village as Da Gama, so he used to transport me to training.
"And Gavin Hunt, I remember Black Leopards owner David Thidiela he didn't want them to sign me. But Gavin Hunt told Thidiela to his face if you don't want this boy to sign, then I'm leaving."
Who was your best friend in football?
"The late Baldwin Maemela, he was the captain of Dynamos. We shared the same interest in most stuff. He was a teacher by profession, and like me, he never abandoned his day job."
What do you dislike about football?
"The PSL club owners take advantage of us players from the rural areas. Players from Gauteng are paid more salaries than us.
"It happened to me at Black Leopards and at Dynamos."
How can you describe your style of play?
"I was not a skilful player I was just very hard. I was not talkative, even if a defender shouted at me, I didn't shout back. I just kept quiet and got on with the business of the day."
Which TV program do you watch?
"My TV is always on sports channels."
If you could join any club right now as a player, which club would you join?
"I admire Sekhukhune United. I like the way they recycle rejected players into good players.
"The way they manage that team, they are never in the news about wrong things."
Which opponent gave you sleepless nights?
"The first one on my list is Gerald Raphahlela. I remember the Black Leopards versus Orlando Pirates match; during a corner kick, that guy once told me to stop marking him because kuyafana maan, these Black Leopards people, are paying me peanuts.
"And he was so hard, he'd kick you and not bother to say sorry.
"Another one from Pirates is Luc Zoa, that one would also kick you and just walk away as if nothing happened.
"In my entire football career, I don't remember scoring against Orlando Pirates. These two players are the reason I never got to score against Pirates."
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
"It would be in Australia. A country that is racism free. They like African people, I've been over there several times."
