Eric '702' September: Why Ernest "Botsotso" Makhanya threatened to stab me

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker, Eric '702' September reveals what really happened in one of the most talked about incidents in South African football history.

An incident that even SABC TV cameras missed.

September says that day the whole Pirates team were told to target him.

In that Soweto Derby that took place in the nineties, September cried tears after he was elbowed by one of the Sea Robbers players.

September was so dangerous on the pitch, Pirates star Ernest "Botsotso" Makhanya threatened to stab him.

"It was all because of Bernard Lushozi," September tells KickOff.

"Tempers become high, in category A games tempers are always high.

"I came on as a substitute that day, and immediately I entered the pitch Botsotso said to me 'Ja ukhona wena? Ungezi ngezitayela futhi!'

"It was the semi-final of the BobSave at FNB Stadium, Chiefs and Pirates.

"When I was introduced in the second-half score was still 0-0. You know my strength. I used to fly, I could out-jump any defender.

"You could tell Bernard was told to stick with me all the time. We got a corner kick, he hit me so hard with his elbow...I fell to the ground. And that time I was nowhere near the ball. I hadn't even made one touch. He hit me right behind my ear.

"I stayed down, it was very painful. It's not like I was pretending or trying to fool the referee. Instead, it's Bernard who was pretending I had hit him.

"When I got back to my feet Botsotso was busy saying 'Ngizokugwaza wena (I will stab you)!' I was abusing Pirates.

"We won that game 1-0, it's me who passed the ball to Doctor [Khumalo].

"After the game, we met in Soweto and he told me he [Bernard] was just following orders. After that match we went to chill at Molapo, Pirates players were also there. Even Botsotso [laughs].

"In my whole career, I have never lost to Pirates, even at Cosmos. Even my first goal as a professional was against Pirates, and my first professional game was against Pirates."
