The Clever Boys visit relegation candidates AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium with Josephs sitting on 409 starts and on the brink of re-writing the PSL history books.
Josephs has already equalled the record of most modern day PSL appearances that has been held by retired goalkeeper Brian Baloyi, who played 409 of the 467 games of his career in the PSL era.
Baloyi started his professional career during the NSL era, which was prior to the start of the modern day PSL which only came into existence in August 1996.
The colourful goalkeeper retired at the end of the 2010/11 season having spent the last seven years of his playing career at Mamelodi Sundowns, but will now have to hand that famous baton to another goalkeeper who has served domestic football with distinction in recent times.
It is worth noting that Josephs has won all major trophies in the local game from the Rothman’s Cup (2000) at Ajax Cape Town, to the ABSA Premiership (2010/11, 2011/12), MTN8 (2010, 2011), Nedbank Cup (2011) and Telkom Knockout (2011) – all of which he won during the famous ‘Double Treble’ spell at Orlando Pirates.
He has also been capped at Under-17 and U-20 and has 24 Bafana Bafana caps to his name.
Josephs has enjoyed a marathon PSL career stretching 18 years and proudly stands amongst just three players along with Baloyi and Orlando Pirates veteran Lucky Lekgwathi to ever reach the colossal mark of 400 starts in club football since the start of the PSL.
‘Slim Kat’ made his PSL debut against African Wanderers on 7 September 1997 as a teenager in the colours of Cape Town Spurs.
The 34-year-old already holds the record of most appearances of all players still active in the PSL after overtaking Lekgwathi, who is still stuck on 403 games having not played any football this season due to injury.
Josephs should stretch that games record further as his playing contract at Wits runs until next season, with an option of a further two years.
Retired defender Edries Burton is still the all-time appearances holder of most games played in domestic football since the start of the National Soccer League back in 1985.
Burton retired in 2007 having started 592 games, though 207 of those games were in the pre-PSL era.
