Alexandra community praying for Maimane Phiri

Gomora United director Joe Seanago has lamented the high rate of crime in Alexandra that almost claimed the life of former Bafana Bafana international Alfred Maimane Phiri.

According to reports, Phiri was shot twice alongside two others at his business place in Alexandra on Thursday.

Gomora, as Alexandra is popularly known is infamous for its high crime.

"This is very unfortunate as we also lost Lucky Maselesele a few months ago," Seanogo tells KickOff.

"Remember, we also lost Shakes Kungwane from the same area a few years ago as well.

"Alexandra is a small township unlike Soweto, and we have few of these good role models for the community.

"Maimane has also done a lot to give back to the community through his football tournaments.

"He is still going to contribute more to the community of Alexandra, and we are praying hard for his speedy recovery.

"We hope he will be back soon, and those who committed this crime face the full wrath of the law," he added.

According to eyewitnesses, the other two people involved died after being shot during the same incident while Phiri is recovering in hospital.
