Chiefs vs Pirates trophy pain: When tables turn!

Orlando Pirates' latest trophy addition has enhanced the discomfort at Kaizer Chiefs who are now within a stone's throw away from their biggest rivals on the trophy front.

Pirates have now won six trophies since Chiefs last lifted silverware back in May 2015.

The Buccaneers have added four MTN8 titles plus two Nedbank Cups with Jose Riveiro the mastermind in delivering five of those trophies.

This has pushed them up to 18 trophies throughout the PSL era years, while Chiefs are still stuck on 20 since their last trophy success in May 2015, which came as a league title.

All the PSL era years have fallen in the years when FIFA recognised football in South Africa, allowing clubs to then compete in CAF club competitions.

For all the troubles that Pirates also went through in their dark years, they will take pride in that they are now bracketed with Chiefs in matters relating to success.

While the latter are dealing with the effects of now being in their 10th season without silverware, which has come with the pain of watching their bitter rivals lifting six trophies, it is worth noting that not so long ago it was the reverse.

When Pirates went through their longest wait for silverware in the PSL era years (seven years), Chiefs won nine trophies.

After lifting the league in the 2002/03 season under Roy Barreto, Bucs had to wait until 2010 for their next piece of silverware when they landed the MTN8 with Rudi Krol in charge at the start of the double treble years.

During that barren spell, Amakhosi won the league twice (2003/04 and 2004/05), lifted the 2006 Absa Cup (Nedbank Cup), went up the podium four times as league cup winners (2003, 2004, 2007, 2009) and added two MTN8 titles (2006 2008).

That was nine trophies won while their biggest rivals were walking thirsty in the desert.

Those were rough years for Pirates, who were mocked at every instance by Chiefs fans, but the tables have since turned with Bucs knowing all too well that 'been there, done that' feeling.
