Pirates warned: 'If Mofokeng does not go abroad...'

A former defender-cum-midfielder, who turned out for both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, has warned Bucs about the prospect of Relebohile Mofokeng not moving overseas soon.

Mofokeng was strongly linked with a move away from Pirates last season, with a number of European clubs said to be interested, and Barcelona B reportedly joining the queue later on.

There were suggestions that perhaps it was too early for the 20-year-old to leave the at the end of 2023/24, especially since he did not have enough club international experience.

After inspiring his club to the CAF Champions League semi-finals, there are expectations to increase his level and move abroad.

As one of the contenders for Footballer of the Season or Player of the Season award in the PSL, is this the right time for the nimble-footed winger to seek greener pastures abroad?

Benson Mhlongo has chipped in.

"Abroad should always be a plus for any player. In terms of how we do things, we're still behind and as a country we don't want to accept that," lamented the Cape Town Spurs assistant.

"There are a lot of things we don't have at our disposal as teams. If he goes overseas, he's gonna grow. Not to say he won't grow at Pirates, but at home there are too many negative elements that the boy will face and has to manoeuvre around.

"We have a problem of bad company, we have a problem of 'slay queens' and and we have a problem of guidance.

"We don't take seriously the mental aspect of the game that these boys go through, the pressure they go through. If Pirates can have a psychologist, he can stay around.

"But if they don't have it, let's save the boy from the social illness we're facing as a country and give the young boy a chance to grow and come back and represent the country for us to have a chance in the World Cup.

"Sometimes it's all about the bigger picture, develop as much as we can for the national team. He has done his part, let him go and open up (space) for other youngsters," 'Mayanga' urged.
