Pirates star eyes Tso Vilakazi's record

An Orlando Pirates star has set himself a December deadline to equal Benedict 'Tso' Vilakazi's goal-scoring record for the Buccaneers.

Vilakazi made 170 appearances for the Sea Robbers between 1999 and 2007. During this period, the Soweto-born star became the club's all-time leading goal scorer with 52 goals to his name - a record yet to be shaken.

However, one man close to tally is current Bucs striker Tshegofatso Mabasa, who has scored 47 goals so far, just six off Vilakazi's record.

The 28-year-old striker has set himself a deadline of December to unseat Vilakazi as Pirates' all-time leading goal scorer.

"I’m looking to have a very big season, and I think I’m 10 or 11 goals away. I want to achieve that record before AFCON starts,” Mabasa told journalists on Thursday.

"It is [possible], in August we already have five games, six for the MTN8, so I don’t see why not.”

Mabasa scored 15 goals last season from 48 appearances, just four fewer than the 19 goals he scored a season prior.

"I don’t see pressure anymore, it’s about speaking things into existence, speaking things into life. It’s how my mother has raised me, it’s about speaking it to life, and it will happen," he added.

Mabasa will have his first chance at adding to that tally when Pirates take on Polokwane City in the quarter-final of the MTN8 on Saturday.

The match will be played at Orlando Stadium.
