R22 million purse chase for Pirates

Orlando Pirates stand to be guaranteed of at least R22 million within the next two weeks after reaching the CAF Champions League group stage.

Pirates have joined Mamelodi Sundowns and the rest of the clubs that make up the 16 clubs in the Champions League this season.

Bucs will have their name in the draw on October 7 with long trips to North Africa for their three away games a possibility considering that there are two North African clubs in Pot 1, three in Pot 2 and one in Pot 4.

Qualifying for the group stage already guarantees Pirates USD700 000 (approx. R12,17 million), which is paid out for finishing third and fourth in the group.

The quarterfinal purse is at USD900 000 (approx. R15,6 million), while the semi-finalists get USD1,2 million (approx. R21 million), runners-up USD2 million (approx. R35 million) and champions USD4 million (approx. R70 million).

So far, USD700 000 is in the pocket for Pirates and two days before the draw for the group stage, they will have R10 million to aim for in the MTN8 final.

Jose Riveiro's charges will face Stellenbosch FC in this year's decider at Moses Mabhida Stadium on October 5 (18:00).

Pirates will have the target of becoming the first club to win this competition three years in a row.

Their total in the bag will be at least R22 million in the next fortnight if they win the MTN8 with the potential of rising, depending on their progression in the Champions League.  

The Soweto giants' MTN8 opponents Stellies will also have similar objectives with R10 million to chase in the final with a minimum of USD400 000 (approx. R7 million) in the bag for reaching the CAF Confederation Cup group stage.
