OFFICIAL: Pirates to face Champions League record holders

Orlando Pirates' return to the CAF Champions League group stage will see them going toe-to-toe with the defending champions Al Ahly, among other teams, as the draw was conducted in Cairo, Egypt on Monday afternoon.

Pirates brushed off the disappointment of last season, where they were denied a place among the 16 best teams on the continent when they were knocked out by Botswana's Jwaneng Galaxy in the second preliminary round.

The match had ended 1-all on aggregate, only for Morena Ramoreboli's men to go through 5-4 on penalties.

However, the Soweto giants would later get their revenge after beating the same side in the same stage of the competition, 3-0 on aggregate.

They had survived a scare against minnows Disciples FC of Madagascar, whom they drew 0-0 away from home in the first preliminary round, before thumping them 4-0 in the return leg.

Pirates have now been drawn in Group C against Al Ahly, who remain a force in African football with 12 Champions League titles and will be favourites to go through to the knockout rounds.

It should make for an interesting duel between son of the South African soil Percy Tau and the Buccaneers defence.

The two sides famously met in the final of the 2013 edition, where the Egyptians won 3-1 on aggregate.

The other teams in the group are Stade d'Abidjan of Ivory Coast as well as Algerian champions CR Belouizdad.

The latter have Khanyisa Mayo in their ranks, whom they signed from Cape Town City prior to the beginning of the current season.
