Riveiro’s riveting effect takes prime spot…

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro's time in South Africa has already shot him to the distinction of ranking amongst the most successful gaffers to run the rule at clubs in the PSL.

Riveiro has neither been in the country for 30 months nor taken charge of even 100 matches but already has five titles attributed to his name.

The Spaniard landed his first MTN8 title two years ago within 17 games in all competitions of his arrival on these shores.

It wasn't a convincing cup triumph to some as Bucs had already lost four and drawn five that season in both league and cup games on the way to lifting that Top Eight title.

Come end of his first season, he added the Nedbank Cup and finished second in the league.

Some were still not won over considering that Pirates were 16 points behind Mamelodi Sundowns in the league under the 47-year-old, who embodies the definition of poise in his conduct.

Enter his second campaign, he defended the MTN8 and did the same in the Nedbank Cup, just like in the league, though second place came with a gap of 23 points from Sundowns.

Riveiro has now guided the Soweto giants to being the first club to win three MTN8 titles in a row.

While it is normal that there could still be some that are not completely convinced about him, the fact remains that the five trophies he has won at Pirates in 27 months define success.

Of the coaches currently in jobs in the PSL, only Manqoba Mngqithi and Gavin Hunt have won more trophies working for top-league clubs in South Africa than what Riveiro already has.

He has averaged a trophy every five months, which comes out to another average of a trophy every 19 games.

If only counting the domestic cup games – considering that this is where he has won all his trophies – then it is five trophies in 28 games.

Cup specialist par excellence is what aptly fits Riveiro in describing him, though for some he still needs to deliver the league title to confirm his royalty seat in South African club football coaching.

The plus is that he has now guided Pirates into the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
