My Muti Story: 'Born-again Christians also used muti'

It's Muti Monday, every Monday we get in touch with a former player, where they share a memorable muti story from their playing days.

In this edition of My Muti Story, we hear from former Orlando Pirates player Sepeke Manamela who tells a story of how they were misled into thinking they were going to meet with the club's chairman Irvin Khoza when in fact they were being taken to a muti man.

Who and where?

"I remember at Pirates, we lost a game, the following day we went to the gym, and after gym, we were told the chairman wanted to see all of us.

"So everybody had to leave their cars behind and use the team bus. Because we were still new at Pirates we did as we were told. Only to find out later that was a false story. We were visiting a muti man in Vaal.

"We were stripped naked and steamed, all that happened in a scary place. That was a scary moment for me. At Winners Park, we never did all those things. And at PJ Stars it was not so extreme."

Why were you doing it?

"Would you dare ask questions? You would lose your job."

Who was the muti man?

"A gentleman who dressed in casual clothes and not in beads as a normal sangoma would do."

What did you have to do?

"Remember this didn't happen on matchday, so there was no instruction."

Did everyone take part?

"When you are in Rome, you do as the Romans do. I'm one of those who are born-again Christians, but I didn't have a choice. Christians also used muti."

What stood out?

"How normal Muti was in our football."

What was the result?

"I remember us playing against Manchester United in the old Vodacom Challenge and they beat us.

"For our next game against Kaizer Chiefs, the club hired four muti men in one day. Just for Chiefs. But they still beat us."
