My First Pay Cheque: 'The salary lasted the whole month'

In this edition of My First Pay Cheque, KickOff catches up with Orlando Pirates legend Jerry "Legs Of Thunder" Sikhosana.

Sikhosana who also played for Giant Blackpool and AmaZulu FC, is the owner of Gauteng ABC Motsepe League side Hollywood Thunder Football Club.

He will always be remembered for the historic goal he netted against Asec Mimosas in Abidjan during the final of the Champions Cup.

Who you signed up for?

"I remember that was at Giant Blackpool, the year was 1988. That's where I received my first paycheque in football.

"We were campaigning in the old OK League when I received my first football salary.

"I still remember cash came in an envelope."

How much was it?

"R400. In those days R400 was equivalent to R4000. And I was still at school, so it helped me a lot with my school needs.

"I was doing my Grade 12."

How did I celebrate?

"I'm from a family that was not so well off when it came to finances, so that money helped a lot at home, I gave it to my mom and she would only give it to me when there was something I needed to buy.

"And I bought a Tricycle for my then two-year old nephew. I was now a proper uncle who could spoil his nephew [laughs]."

What did I buy?

"I bought a JVC VCR [Video Cassette Recorder] so we could watch movies. We now had our own mini cinema."

Did it last you the whole month?

"Yes it did, the salary lasted the whole month. I also used it for my transport to school.

"Back then I was still at school so I was not someone who was all over the place. My finances were managed well."
