Bucs legend: Chaine has replaced Meyiwa

Legendary former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Innocent "Ayoba-Yoh!" Mayoyo believes that the current Goalkeeper of the Season, Sipho Chaine, has now reached the level of the late Senzo Meyiwa.

Chaine was awarded the 2024/2025 Betway Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season on Tuesday, surpassing strong contenders such as Ronwen Williams from Mamelodi Sundowns and Elvis Chipezeze from Magesi.

"Considering the accolades that Pirates have won, Chaine truly deserves this goalkeeper of the season award," Mayoyo told KickOff.

"In soccer, we should not always see the same player as the goalkeeper of the season due to the element of competition.

"Yes, in football, we evaluate players season by season, and currently, he is the number one goalkeeper for Pirates, just as Meyiwa was.

"There can never be another Senzo Meyiwa, but Chaine has reached a similar level; we can say he is the Senzo Meyiwa of today. He has effectively taken his place and is currently performing at a top level. This achievement is not by chance.

"Like Meyiwa, Chaine is also a member of the national team, which is commendable. We can't ask for more.

"With Chaine winning this award, it means that Pirates have secured their position in goalkeeping, leaving the others to serve as his backups.

"Moving forward, Chaine must continue doing what he does best. Every goalkeeper concedes goals, so that isn't a major concern. He should focus on being consistent until he becomes the number one in the national team.

"It took Ronwen Williams time to achieve his status as the number one goalkeeper in the national team, so all positions are open to being contested."
