Pirates' struggles against teams from the second tier are not exactly new, as in 2023/24, they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Town Spurs, with Lubeni Haukongo and Jarrod Moroole giving the latter a two-goal cushion, before Evidence Makgopa pulled one back.
They could still not get maximum points from a team that was eventually relegated, finishing bottom, after a 1-1 draw in the reverse tie.
In the same campaign, the team then coached by Jose Riveiro also had to contend with a 1-1 result against Polokwane City and only managed a 1-0 win in the reverse.
In the 2022/23 campaign, they also struggled against newbies Richards Bay FC, who held them to a goalless draw in the first meeting, although Bucs won the return encounter 2-0.

However, the Houghton-based outfit's struggles against teams from the Motsepe Foundation Championship have generally been the theme, failin to beat Moroka Swallows in two meetings in 2020/21, with both clashes ending 1-1.
