Ouaddou facing common problem at Pirates?

Orlando Pirates scraped past Orbit College FC to earn their second haul of three points in the Betway Premiership, and now KickOff looks at how they have fared against newly-promoted sides recently.

The Soweto giants laboured to a narrow 1-0 win over Orbit on Tuesday, with the suitability of head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou being questioned once again, considering the squad at his disposal.

Last season, the side also just about nicked a 1-0 win over Magesi FC in the first round, thanks to a Relebohile Mofokeng effort, while they were held to a 1-1 draw in the return fixture, as Edmore Chirambadare cancelled out an early Patrick Maswanganyi strike.

Pirates' struggles against teams from the second tier are not exactly new, as in 2023/24, they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Town Spurs, with Lubeni Haukongo and Jarrod Moroole giving the latter a two-goal cushion, before Evidence Makgopa pulled one back.

They could still not get maximum points from a team that was eventually relegated, finishing bottom, after a 1-1 draw in the reverse tie.

In the same campaign, the team then coached by Jose Riveiro also had to contend with a 1-1 result against Polokwane City and only managed a 1-0 win in the reverse.

In the 2022/23 campaign, they also struggled against newbies Richards Bay FC, who held them to a goalless draw in the first meeting, although Bucs won the return encounter 2-0.

It is only in the season prior that they got maximum points across both fixtures from a newly promoted outfit, beating Sekhukhune United 2-1 and 1-0.

However, the Houghton-based outfit's struggles against teams from the Motsepe Foundation Championship have generally been the theme, failin to beat Moroka Swallows in two meetings in 2020/21, with both clashes ending 1-1.
