Riveiro reveals biggest lessons from PSL

Now former Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has opened up on what has been the biggest lesson from his three-year spell in South Africa and the PSL.

Riveiro has left Pirates after three seasons, having collected five trophies.

He also came narrowly close to adding more, as his side only lost the final of the Nedbank Cup to old foes Kaizer Chiefs, and went as far as the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League this season.

The Buccaneers will finish second in the Betway Premiership behind Mamelodi Sundowns, who retain the league title for an eighth consecutive campaign.

Speaking to media after his last match - a 3-0 win over Golden Arrows - Riveiro revealed some lessons he had learned from the PSL.

"Resilience. Resilience. It’s a hell of a league. It’s not an easy league. Trust me, guys, it is not an easy one," said the Vigo-born man.

"I think the context is very unique. I can’t speak much about that, but the context of South African football, it’s very unique.

"But as a lesson, I think my job as a coach is to understand where I am. If I don’t do it, then I’m not going to succeed.

"It doesn’t matter how much I know about football and how quickly I am to read what is happening on the field, if I don’t understand the culture and the space, it’s not going to work.

"I learned here not to judge anybody. I don’t do it. Sometimes early in my career, I used to ask myself why this kind of behaviour," he went on.

The Spaniard is widely expected to be unveiled as Al Ahly's head coach on Thursday following the sacking of Marcel Koller.

Meanwhile, the Soweto giants have three more league matches to play before wrapping up their season.
