Kaizer Chiefs could rotate charges for Nedbank Cup opening round

Chiefs are currently without the services of no less than nine players from their 31-man squad heading into this weekend’s cup clash with ABC Motsepe League outfit Tornado FC at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium.

Amakhosi have had number one shot-stopper Itumeleng Khune, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Philani Zulu and Erick Mathoho ruled out since December, while Joseph Molangoane has been on the sidelines since August and Wiseman Meyiwa since November.

Since the turn of the year, Lorenzo Gordinho, Lebogang Manyama and Leonardo Castro have been the latest patients in the medical room in recent weeks, while George Maluleka is also a doubt for this weekend’s tie after being hauled off against ZESCO United on Saturday.

With Chiefs coming up against lower-division opposition, coach Ernst Middendorp could turn to fringe players who have bided their time since his arrival at the start of December.

Options up front include Ryan Moon and Gustavo Paez, though Bernard Parker has also enjoyed a solid partnership up front alongside Khama Billiat.

In midfield, Siphelele Ntshangase looks poised for a run out after coming on for the injured Maluleka over the weekend, with his last start having come against SuperSport United in December.

In defence, Middendorp may well be tempted to change things up given their recent troubles in conceding, with Siyabonga Ngezana waiting for his first start since the departure of Giovanni Solinas.

Meanwhile, having spoken highly of reserve goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma following his display against Werde Bremen earlier this month, the former Maritzburg United mentor could afford the 23-year-old his second appearance of the season.

Kick-off of the clash on Sunday is scheduled for 15h30.
