Ernst Middendorp clarifies Itumeleng Khune, Daniel Akpeyi situation

Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp confirmed that Itumeleng Khune will start against Highlands Park but further clarified that Daniel Akpeyi remains the club's first-choice goalkeeper.

Khune is set to continue his duties in the Nedbank Cup, when they face the Lions of the North in their Last 16 encounter at Makhulong Stadium this afternoon (15h00).

This, however, has nothing to do with Akpeyi's recent blunder that led to Chiefs' defeat to Maritzburg United last weekend, and Middendorp has since cleared the air around his stance on the technical team's stance surrounding their goalkeeping situation.

"For us, an indication of who's playing is always based on what's happening on the training field, how the guys are performing, and we discuss it day-in and day-out," said Middendorp.

"We meet every morning at 8am and go through and provide our impression about it, and that's the situation. We started the Nedbank Cup with Itu Khune in goal, and now we have the next round and as we did last year with Bruce Bvuma in the cup, Khune will start.

"Let me make one thing clear, our supporters are very intelligent, they don't get carried away just because there was a little small mistake [by Akpeyi] and we conceded in our defensive work.

"We've seen a fantastic Daniel Akpeyi over months, rescuing us in the final stages by saving a penalty; he was very crucial in other games and, as everyone knows, he was the Player of the Month [for September-October].

"What we have seen over the past seven or eight months, please guys, everybody who observes and follows Kaizer Chiefs knows exactly what a goalkeeper like Daniel Akpeyi has done for us during this season.

"There is no way in this moment for me, for us, or each and everybody in this sorted Kaizer Chiefs so-called family, who is ignoring it."
