Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids targets Mamelodi Sundowns scalp in MTN8

The pairing was determined by their league positions last season as Sundowns finished second on the Absa Premiership log and the Team of Choice placed seventh.

Both league matches between the two ended in draws last season - the first a goalless draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium and the second a 2-2 draw in Pretoria that saw Sundowns relinquish their league title to Bidvest Wits that very night.

Davids, who has taken up the head coach position at Maritzburg on a full-time basis after two separate spells as caretaker last season, is determined to to make his mark - starting with victory over Sundowns.

"Of course Sundowns have an advantage on the one hand [that they were recently playing competitive CAF Champions League games} but the fatigue will still set in on the other hand" said Davids.

"Of course we're having our preparation time now where we are assembling, not quite 90 percent of our squad will be there. But of course we will continue to strengthen in certain areas and that is normal in a team.

"I can assure you we'll be ready. The last game we played them, we've got to forget about it. It's done. I'ts over. This is a fresh start for us and it will definitely be an interesting game and a game that we'll go for."

The Team of Choice, who have already bolstered their squad with Ghanaian goalkeeper Richards Ofori, will build match fitness for their MTN8 showdown as they participate in this weekend's KZN Premier's Cup against the province's six other professional sides at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay.
