On Saturday at Orlando Stadium, Amakhosi lost to their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in a game where they used several youth team products.
Due the FIFA transfer ban and injuries coach Gavin Hunt was forced to play the likes of Njabulo Blom, Ngosingiphile Ngcobo, Happy Mashiane, Keletso Sifama and Lebohang Letsako against a Pirates side that was full of experienced campaigners.
Amakhosi ended up losing the match 3-0, and Matsau believes there are only a few players who are made for such a big occasion.
"You know I think the problem of Chiefs is the same as last season," Matsau tells snl24.com/kickoff.
"What I can tell you is that Chiefs, they've got a problem in the middle and that's where Pirates won the game. They played the youngsters ja but the Derby needs people who understand a Derby.
"That's why sometimes when we play a Derby there are a lot of things happening in the camp or in the dressing room. Chiefs and Pirates don't want to lose against each other.
"Yes they are playing well but they don't have luck. They created chances but they couldn't score them. As I said, Derbies need people who understand them, who've been there, people with experience.
"But I understand that the coach gave those young boys a chance because of how they played against Chippa United. But it benefited Pirates because you know in a Derby experience counts. Derby needs people who understands the Derby.
"In the middle Ngcobo and Blom are youngsters, they've never played the Derby before you know. Derby is pressure itself. Derby is all about pride."
