Cape Town Spurs players 'on pause'

An air of anxiety and worry has found its way inside the Cape Town Spurs camp following the club’s relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship last weekend.

Spurs failed to put their chances away and paid the ultimate price in losing 1-0 to Durban City at Athlone Stadium on Sunday, and with that bid goodbye to the second tier as they go down to the amateur ranks.

Such a tragic turn of events puts the livelihoods of many at stake, with drastic salary cuts expected all around, while the market value of many a player in the squad takes a nosedive too.

Where to from here?

“We had a meeting on Monday at 10:30, and all the players were there together with the club owner Ari (Efstathiou) and his brother,” reveals a player speaking on condition of anonymity.

“It was about the way forward and they said it would depend on the cases that were in front of the PSL. We are just like people who have been put on pause. We are still waiting and we don’t know what the situation is until these cases (are completed).

“They didn’t specify what’s going to happy if the cases don’t go in our favour, whether they are going to buy a status or what. So, for now, we don’t know what’s going to happen,” says the player.

In particular, it will be interesting to see if the club manages to hold on to the likes of Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman, who have been the subject of speculation regarding what the future holds in their careers.

Regulations deem all Urban Warriors players free agents as of 1 July as they will now be playing in the amateur ranks, although any suitors will have to fork out a compensation fee if the players were developed at Ikamva.
