Zwane’s gigantic mark at Downs

Themba Zwane's standing as the longest serving player at Mamelodi Sundowns has earned him undisputed legendary status with an incredible trophy count collection.

The African Football League trophy that Zwane lifted on Sunday meant the veteran attacker has now lifted silverware in every season that he has spent at Chloorkop since returning from his loan at Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Zwane won the 2014-15 Nedbank Cup in his first season back from Aces.

Then the following season (2015-16) he added the league title and Telkom KnockOut.

From August 2016 through to May 2017, the 34-year-old won the CAF Champions League and CAF Super League trophies.

For the last six years, Zwane has been a league champion and through that time has won the Nedbank Cup twice, added the Telkom (2019) and MTN8 (2021).

The significance of the AFL title was that it will carry the weight of making sure that Zwane reaches the rank of winning trophies 10 seasons in a row at Sundowns.

Zwane's trophy count at Sundowns has now reached 16.

Mshishi arrived at Sundowns in January 2011 and was overshadowed by Teko Modise on the day the two players were presented to the media but has gone on to earn legendary shadows.

From January 2011, Zwane battled his way to just 18 starts and a single goal before he was loaned out for the 2013/14 season.

Since his return he has been cruising.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - APRIL 09: Denis Onyan

Worth noting is that Denis Onyango arrived six months after Zwane and also went away on loan at BidVest Wits during the 2013/14 and so has won the same number of trophies at Sundowns.

Onyango also won three league titles at SuperSport United which pushes his career total in South Africa to 19 trophies.

Zwane and Onyango are the only surviving members from the squad that won the 2016 Champions League.
