'This should ring alarm bells in Rulani's head'

Mamelodi Sundowns legend and former academy coach Joel "Fire" Masilela has weighed in on the club's decision to sack Rulani Mokwena, while also revealing what returnee Steve Komphela brings to Chloorkop.

South African football fraternity is still trying to figure out how the DStv Premiership champions came to their decision.

A not-so-rosy relationship between Mokwena and the club's football director Flemming Berg is said to have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

Sundowns have since roped in Steve Komphela to occupy the senior coach role.

"Steve is coming back home and that's good news," Masilela shares with KickOff.

"Coaches have their differences. Steve has got his philosophy. He left Sundowns in a good way, he left Sundowns to get himself some breather and new challenges.

"You could tell by comments that he knew he was gonna come back. He wanted his own space so he could implement his philosophy.

"This should ring alarm bells in Rulani's head, he should be asking himself what did he do wrong? I would have loved to see them working together again. I know these two, they are very, very good friends.

"In his first stint, Steve brought a lot of things at Sundowns. Trust me, I know. He brought fresh ideas and he is tactically smart and, most of all, he can work with young players. That's one thing I know about him. He will give the Sundowns youngsters a chance.

"So, Steve is the right person for the job.

"As you've seen so far since they started pre-season, Sundowns don't believe in buying top expensive players anymore. They are not going to do that again.

"Now they want to develop players. The sporting director, Flemming Berg, believes in young players.

"You cannot always buy, buy, buy. Not to say that they will ignore an exceptional player if they see one available, they will still go for the best, but they will no longer rely on buying.

"Remember the team has invested a lot in their development, they now want results, they want to develop and sell to Europe.

"They want to continue where they left off with the likes of Percy Tau and Cassius Mailula. And if you look at Steve's history, he once coached in the development."
