Khune’s options after Chiefs

The situation of being outside with no offer for a new playing contract at Kaizer Chiefs is completely new for Itumeleng Khune after 25 years at the club.

Khune now has his worst fears confirmed at Chiefs with the club evidently sticking to their decision that the 37-year-old will not get another playing contract after the expiry of his last at the end of June.

Last year, Chiefs declared Khune had penned his last playing contract, before subsequently honouring him for long service on the day that he made his last appearance on May 18.

On the contrary, the veteran keeper has insisted on his desire to continue playing.

If that is to happen, then it will not be at Chiefs, the only club that he has ever called home throughout his first team career, which has stretched two decades.

Driving from his house in Ruimsig via the N1 South and off-ramping on the Golden Highway to the Chiefs base will suddenly stop.

So much will feel strange, with the possibility of a different pay date than the 28th of every month another huge factor.

Moving away from Chiefs will most likely come with a lower package compared to what he has enjoyed for most of his years at Chiefs.

The options to play for Khune will be at Chippa United, but that will come with Stanley Nwabali leaving.

TS Galaxy might be tempted after the departure of Vasilije Kolak and speculation suggesting Fiarce Ntwari might leave.

With Galaxy based in Johannesburg and only travelling to Mpumalanga for home games, this will work perfect for Khune, who has a young family that has grown accustomed to having him at home more than he is away.

Sekhukhune United would have been another opportunity offering similar arrangements to Galaxy as they also train in Johannesburg and travel to play home games in Limpopo.

However, Babina Noko have signed Lloyd Kazapua (35) and have Badra Ali Sangare (38).

SuperSport United are also in the market for a goalkeeper, preferably a solid option that will give them stability in the last line of defence.

Khune has only played 20 games in the last three years and so while he has the experience, there could be doubts about if he can still do the job consistently.

This might only get him a contract with clauses relating to performance-based remuneration, having also had no clean sheet in the last 10 games that he started at Chiefs.
