Cardoso opens Player of the Season Pandora's box?

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso is backing one of his stars as the best candidate for the PSL Player of the Season award with only a handful of fixtures left in the domestic game.

Several Sundowns players have stood up to be counted this season, with the side one match away from defending the championship, while they are in the CAF Champions League final.

One of the standout stars has been Lucas Ribeiro Costa, who has collected a few accolades this season, including three Goal of the Month awards consecutively since the turn of the year.

On the evidence of it, the midfielder does face stiff competition for the Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season from the likes of Relebohile Mofokeng, who has had a brilliant campaign with Orlando Pirates.

The lad from the Vaal has already won the MTN8 with his side whilst also vying for the Nedbank Cup, the final of which is taking plac in Durban on Saturday.

Cardoso says he will be happy to see Ribeiro win the Player of the Season award.

"If you see the goals that he scored, the beautiful goals he scored, the moments he had to help carry the team forward... Obviously, it is always the team that promotes the player, but also Lucas, there are moments he helped a lot,” said Cardos at the post-match press conference after a 3-0 win over Chippa United on Wednesday.

He was responding to a KickOf.com query.

“I think for me, he is a favourite candidate and I don’t see anyone express himself like Lucas for so long, and has been a consistent player in the last year.

"This year, he brought and expressed things that are difficult to see, which has to do with the work of the team. I will be happy because it would be very fair if he wins the Player of the Season,” added the gaffer.
